Pumpkins for Patients

About Pumpkins For Patients

The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Ohio has partnered with Pickering Hill Farms in Avon and Patterson's Farm Market in Chesterland to provide "Pumpkins for Patients," a special program designed to spread autumn cheer and make a difference in the lives of terminally-ill VNA Hospice patients and their families.

Once donated, the pumpkins are painted by area students, then delivered by VNA Hospice care teams to patients' homes in seven northeast Ohio counties.

Seven area schools have volunteered to paint "Pumpkins for Patients," providing meaningful service to the community while learning about what hospice is and who will be receiving the benefits of their creative efforts. They are Urban Community School, Gilmour Academy, St. Mary Magdalene/St. Justin Martyr School, Magnifcat High School, Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Hathaway Brown, and Laurel School.

Thanks To Our Volunteers and Paint Donors!
The "Pumpkins for Patients" poster and donations cards were designed by Pat Sandy, a Rocky River resident who is a volunteer with VNA Hospice in his spare time. During the day he works as a Senior Program Director of Humorous Cards (and "Humor Expert") at American Greetings. Many other volunteers have donated their time to deliver the pumpkins throughout northeast Ohio. AOK! Fitness donated to the painting session at Cleveland Central Catholic and Blue Star Design donated to the painting session at Urban Community School.

About VNA Hospice
Hospice came about in the Middle Ages as a way to comfort and care for the dying. In 2007, an estimated 1.4 million Americans received hospice services. The focus of hospice is to provide a compassionate team of people who help a person with a life-limiting illness or injury die pain-free and with dignity. Expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support are expressly tailored to each person’s needs and wishes. The goal is to enhance comfort and quality of life for one’s remaining time.

VNA Hospice compassionately cares for northeast Ohioans in their homes, no matter where they call home - a private residence, an assisted living center, or a nursing home. The VNA Hospice care team includes nurses, physicians, therapists, social workers, counselors, aides and volunteers who work together with patients, caregivers, families and physicians to provide the highest quality support and comfort. A plan of care is developed for each patient and is updated routinely as the patient's condition changes. All VNA Hospice nurses are required to be hospice-certified, and the VNA of Ohio is the only hospice provider in the area to have such a requirement. VNA Hospice serves patients and their families in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties. In addition, the VNA Hospice Care Center at MetroHealth's Old Brooklyn campus provides state-of-the-art inpatient care for comfort and care in a home-like setting.
